Chapter 8

Emma’s sharp intake of air at his confession was audible. Trace saw the question in her eyes as her lips parted. She was about to say something—most likely, ask what he meant by his bold statement—when a booming voice called out to them from the front of her apartment.

“Dallas Police Department!”

You have lousy fucking timing, Detective.

“Back here!” He hollered in return.

Forcing himself to move, Trace pulled his hand away and stepped to the side.

Gun drawn, Detective West came rushing through the door with an attractive brunette hot on his tail. Both detectives had their guns drawn, ready for battle.

“What the hell, Winters?” West took in the damaged room, landing on the body near his feet.

“You tell me, Detective. I was rather hoping this thing had ended with the guy lying on the slab in your morgue.”

“We all were.” The man holstered his weapon. “And I think at this point, we should be on a first-name basis, don’t you?” Tipping his head toward the female detective, he added, “This is my partner, Detective Riley York.”

“Partner and fiancée.” Riley sheathed her gun, as well. Holding out her hand, she gave Trace a nice, firm handshake. “Nice to meet you.”

Fiancée?

First Mac and Coop, and now these two? Trace was beginning to seriously rethink his whole, no-fraternization rule.

“Trace Winters.” He shook her hand.

“Miss Cooper.” Riley greeted Emma with the same gesture. “Are you okay? The ambulance should be here any minute.”

“It’s Emma, and I’m fine.” Her gaze swung up to his as if she were expecting an argument to ensue. But before Trace could disagree, she added, “Really. I feel a lot better, now.”

He had to admit, she actually looked better. Her color was almost back to normal, and her breaths were coming and going at a healthy rate.

That had been his goal when he’d brought up the way she’d blurted out her declaration of love. Apparently, it worked.

Trace had known exactly why Emma had blurted out those three not-so-little words. Truth be told, her quick thinking had impressed the hell out of him.

In the heat of the moment, she’d faced the danger head-on. But after, especially during her rant about how he needed to skip town, she’d been precariously close to breaking apart.

Needing a way to rid her of the crazy notion that any of this was her fault—or that he’d even consider leaving her alone in this—he’d purposely mentioned her unconventional diversion tactic in order to distract her from her self-destructive thoughts.

Thankfully, it had worked.

The conversation after that, however...the one where he’d practically bared his fucking soul...that shit had not been planned.

Trace hadn’t meant to confess his unsteady emotions, nor had he intended to bare his reasons for not letting anyone get close to him. And he sure as fuck hadn’t planned on letting her know how dangerous she was to him.

But he’d spoken the truth.

She was dangerous. To him...to his heart. Trace knew Emma was too good of a person to ever purposely hurt him, but that didn’t matter.

If he let his guard down with her.
